Synopsis
This workshop is all about the use of educational escape rooms to teach cyber security. The following topics will be covered:
- What are escape rooms?
- What are educational escape rooms and the different forms of educational escape rooms.
- What are some of the learning challenges that educational escape rooms overcome (engagement, intrinsic motivation, peer learning).
- What do educational escape rooms consist of (plot/storyline, puzzles, validation hardware)
We will do a 45 minute escape room with all the participants where they get a hands on feel and will need to complete a series of cyber security puzzles three puzzles.
We will then talk about the other sorts of puzzles we have and contrasting them against traditional training pedagogies with specific reference to cyber security.
We will talk more widely about developing storylines and weaving a theme within the escape room to turn it from a series of disjointed problem-solving tasks into a game which improves motivation and learner engagement.
We will talk about different validation mechanisms and the important game dynamics of puzzle validation, timekeeping, dissuading guessing and clue giving.
We will talk about the feedback from participants across thousands of participants who have completed our escape rooms.
Finally, we will provide a series of tips for participants wanting to develop their own escape rooms or to partner with us in educating others within cyber security domains.
