Synopsis

In this dynamic presentation, we will explore the global landscape of cybersecurity, focusing on the readiness of nations to face the increasing threat of cyber warfare. Our journey begins with a detailed analysis of the spike in cyber incidents in Australia, examining the data trends over recent years and identifying key factors contributing to this rise.

We will then delve into the measures Australia has implemented to protect itself against these threats, highlighting critical laws, regulations, and strategic initiatives such as the Cyber Security Strategy 2020, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) initiatives, and the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Strategy.

To provide a comprehensive understanding, we will compare Australia's cybersecurity readiness with that of other leading countries, such as Israel and Japan. Israel, renowned for its advanced cybersecurity capabilities, offers valuable lessons with its proactive and integrated approach, leveraging government and military involvement, public-private partnerships, and a thriving cybersecurity industry. Japan's focus on critical infrastructure protection, government policies, and public awareness campaigns also provides key insights into effective cybersecurity practices.

A case study format will be used to dissect Israel's and Japan's cybersecurity strategies, showcasing their strengths and identifying areas where Australia can enhance its efforts. We will utilise metrics such as the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) to provide an objective comparison.

The presentation will also emphasise the critical importance of an incident response plan. We will discuss why having a robust incident response plan is essential for minimising damage, ensuring quicker recovery, complying with legal and regulatory requirements, and maintaining stakeholder trust.

Attendees will learn about the key components of an effective incident response plan, including preparation, identification, containment, eradication, recovery, and lessons learned. A flowchart or checklist will be provided to illustrate these components clearly.
