Synopsis

R U Ok is a wonderful initiative to raise the focus on Mental Health issues in our society. It is enthusiastically embraced by Corporate Australia and celebrated on a special day.

However, do we just broadcast R U Ok to our nearest and dearest, note the affirming nod or single word response and move on without really opening a "connection-orientated" deeper discussion where actual "data" is exchanged? Do we know how to have that conversation if the answer is no? How do we recognise when things don't seem right?

Using a light non-technical discussion of the difference between TCP and UDP packets as an example, Peter will discuss the difference between making a connection through a real conversation (TCP) versus a broadcast to many, with no expectation of a response (UDP).

Cybersecurity can be a highly stressful role, with evidence of staff shortages, high staff turnover and a number of recent reports researching the impacts on Mental Health within the Cybersecurity industry.

In this session we will identify the "Behavioural indicators of compromise" and the "Defence in depth" strategies for Mental Health in Cybersecurity. What can senior management and boards do to manage the psychosocial hazards in the workplace that are listed in the Safe Work Act? What are the "top six" that apply more directly to Cybersecurity.

During Peter's 2023 masters capstone project at Edith Cowan University - Five Quick Wins for Boards; one of the quick wins "Protect your people" explores integrating Mental Health First Aid (as required by the Work Safe Act) into the company's incident response process.

This session will be a deeper dive into Win #4 Protect Your People, and a conversation on the unique Mental Health challenges confronting the Cybersecurity industry featuring the latest research.

Reaching into his own personal lived experience, Peter will construct a Mental Health - Defence in Depth Strategy that covers Indicators of Compromise (IOC) and responding with Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) techniques for mindfulness in our daily mental health when working in cyber environments.
