Melinda Smith is Special Counsel, Privacy at Griffin Legal. She has broad experience in both the private and public sectors across legal and policy roles, within IT teams, and as a lecturer in both Privacy Law and Legal Expert Systems at the Australian National University. Melinda works closely with a number of Griffin Legal clients on the privacy aspects of complex IT and policy projects. Her IT experience is in rule-based expert / decision support systems using natural language processing. As a Privacy Law specialist she is increasingly called on to advise on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), both public and private, and is struck by the lack of comprehensive AI regulation in Australia and by the way privacy law is often left to step into the breach.
