Improve your Operational Security from Beginner to Ninja
The talk will be in 3 parts:
1. what is the problem ?
1.1 An overview of all the places your private data (PII and sensitive data) is captured by government and private entities, and the types of data.
1.2 An overview of OSINT techniques used by malicious actors, using publicly available data.
1.3 A case study of a cyber attack on an individual, using publicly available data.
2. what is the solution? how to protect your data online :
Beginner level:
- data removals - what is allowed under the law, and what Australian and non-Australian companies will and won't do (with reference to the Australian Privacy Principles).
- data removal requests - how to be heard and other options
- social media - how to secure
- email - choosing a provider
Ninja level:
- creating fake profiles - how to create noise
- proxies and VPNs - what they can and can't do for you
- mobile devices - a quick review of options including a de-googled phone
- physical addresses and utilities - options for hiding your home address
- driving - how to anonymise your car
- employment - how to disappear at work
The talk will be based on the work of Michael Bassell's "OSINT techniques" and "Extreme Privacy" books. I have undertaken many of the suggestions from "Extreme Privacy" so can contextualise his suggestions for an Australian audience, based on our legislation and context.
