Synopsis

Universities juggle a vast number of emails daily, making them prime targets for cyberattacks. I am a seasoned cyber security professional who with the help of my team successfully implemented robust email security measures at a major university. I will dive into my strategies, including deploying DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance), migrating MX records (Mail Exchanger records), and configuring advanced email filtering.

Target Audience:

  • IT/Cyber professionals responsible for university email security
  • System administrators
  • Security awareness advocates

Discussion Topics:

  1. The Evolving Landscape of Email Threats in Universities: I can discuss the current threats I face regarding email security, including phishing attacks, fake invoices, and malware distribution.
  2. Implementing DMARC for Enhanced Security: I can delve into my experience deploying DMARC at the university. I will explain how DMARC authenticates email messages and prevents unauthorized use of the university domain, ultimately mitigating spoofing attempts.
  3. Migrating and Securing MX Records: I can discuss the process of migrating MX records to a secure email gateway and the benefits it provides, such as advanced spam and malware filtering.
  4. Configuring Advanced Email Filtering: I can explore the different filtering techniques used to identify and quarantine malicious emails. This may include techniques like sender reputation filtering, keyword filtering, and attachment sandboxing.
  5. User Education and Practices: I can discuss the importance of user education in email security and my team’s methods.

This "Ask an Expert" session will equip IT/Cyber professionals with the knowledge and tools to strengthen email security at their organisations.
