Synopsis

SMB and SME organisations typically struggle with incorporating basic cybersecurity hygiene, primarily due to lack of time, available resources, budget constraints and education.

Business owners, directors and boards typically make decisions from little or poorly informed advice due to not having access to proper advisory services to help implement or enhance their Cyber resiliency.

According to the ASD 22/23 Threat report, SMBs make up a majority of all reported attacks and are the most impacted. Through various reports 50-60% of small businesses don't recover from cyber incidents.

Other studies have suggested that SMB owners prefer not to look for separate providers for their IT and Cyber management, but rather endeavour to find a single suitable partner to support all their technological needs.

MSPs have been at the forefront of supporting SMBs in their Technology transformation for decades and due to necessity have been tasked to support their Security needs as well.

MSPs already have the capabilities and exposure to their clients IT environment to impact sufficient change. Many already have key relationships and trust of their clients and can be a viable and affordable alternatively to trying to hire an internal Security expert which is a difficult proposition when resources are already so sparse.

Industry bodies like CompTIA and the CSCAU as well as the Insurance industry are also supporting SMEs by working with MSPs and providing services, education and auditable certification standards to hold providers accountable.

Until legal mandates are presented and enforced, SMBs need a viable solution to reduce their risk and exposure.

SMBs can’t do it themselves but the right MSP can fill those shoes.
