Synopsis
Join me on a personal journey through the highs and lows of leadership in the cyber security domain. As a Government leader for prominent managed service and consulting service providers I've spent 15 years at the forefront of cyber defence, dedicated to safeguarding our way of life in Australia and across the Five Eyes. However, the relentless pace and pressures of the industry took a toll on my mental and physical well-being, leading me to the brink of burnout.
In this presentation, I'll candidly share my story of resilience and recovery, detailing the pivotal moments that forced me to confront the harsh reality of my deteriorating health and strained relationships. From the allure of career advancement to the toxic work culture that exacerbated my stress, I'll explore the myriad factors that contributed to my downward spiral.
But amidst the darkness, there was a glimmer of hope. The tragic loss of a colleague to suicide served as a wake-up call, prompting me to reassess my priorities and make the courageous decision to prioritise my own well-being and that of my family. Change became not just a necessity, but a lifeline, allowing me to rediscover the joys of life outside of work, shed some weight, and reconnect with loved ones.
Yet, just as I began to chart a path towards renewal, I faced another unexpected hurdle – potential redundancy. Despite the initial shock, this setback ultimately became the catalyst for my transformation. Armed with newfound clarity and determination, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and reinvention, emerging stronger and healthier than ever before.
Through my experience, I've gleaned invaluable insights and practical strategies for navigating the treacherous waters of high-stress executive positions in the cyber industry. From setting boundaries and managing expectations to prioritising self-care and fostering a supportive work culture, I'll share actionable tips for success that transcend the boundaries of organisational hierarchies.
Join me as we collectively dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health in the cyber security community and pave the way for a future where leaders thrive not in spite of their humanity, but because of it. Together, we can cultivate a culture of resilience and well-being that ensures the longevity and effectiveness of our cyber defences.
