Synopsis

Over the next four years, the shortfall of qualified cyber security professionals is forecast to hit up to 30,000 unfilled positions across Australia.

We are no longer able to rely on experienced cyber and technical professionals. But do we have to?

In this talk I seek to emphasize, that the future is now and investing in individuals from diverse experiential backgrounds, can and will bring value to organisations looking to expand their cyber security capabilities.

Sharing my own experience moving from a career in nursing, I will step through the skills and behaviors I was able to transfer from my previous career. I will share how I successfully transitioned into cyber security and now provide my knowledge, knowhow, and experience to positively impact outcomes for our clients.

I will then highlight how taking a chance on individuals without experience can bring great value to a cyber security role and outline what to look for in these individuals.

The talk will proceed through the following outline:

  • Why organisations need to call to action, to close the skills shortage gap.
  • MY own story - Motivations to make the move, (some stats about the industry as well as the work/life balance)
  • Lack of technical skills is not a barrier (some insights from my experience with some statistics to back it up)
  • How considering people with limited cyber experience, but broad transferable skills, can benefit organisations to effectively grow their cyber capability.
  • How to cross examine life/lived/ experiential skills to complement your organisational needs and security teams and better secure your organisation.
  • Recommendations to supporting and upskilling an employee once they’ve been hired.
  • Tips for getting your foot in the door.
